We found this item in a “hoarder’s” garage, buried under several bags of clothing and other antiques. Unfortunately, she also knew the value, so a great deal was not to be had. That being said, I had to have it. Antique trunks are easy to find, but carpenters chests are quite another thing entirely. Especially a chest with intact inserts and original hardware and lock.
We had the idea to make it into a table. We used two antique stools as the legs and placed it in our entryway. It truly is a great piece. I was loathed to drill any holes in this piece, so the chest sits directly on the stools. Table legs could be mounted, or another support could be used. We initially had it sitting on the cast iron bottom of a kneeling stool.
