We have a set of (4) 1959 Mademoiselle Chairs by Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara for Swedish furniture company Edsby-verken. $600 each, or $2000 for the set.
As with George Nakashima’s similar explorations, Tapiovaara’s variations on the traditional “Windsor chair” theme were usually informed by non-Anglo-American native influences (Japanese for Nakashima, Finnish for Tapiovaara). With the “Mademoiselle” chair Tapiovaara’s Finnish folk inspiration blends seamlessly with a classic, comfortable mid-century modern minimalism. Delicate and feminine, these low chairs are amazingly comfortable!
