These reclaimed floating ground rope door mats are great on many levels:
Most importantly, they are made of reclaimed floating ground rope that has been traded in for sinking ground lines by Maine lobstermen. This is great because, floating lines disrupt sea-life, in particular, they often entangle the Northern Right Whale, an endangered species. By replacing these lines with ground lines this obstacle is removed.
This act of stewardship, however comes at a high cost to the lobstermen in time, effort and cost of new rope. Plus, there results large quantities of discarded sinking rope. Enter: the door mat. The mat provides a perfect use for the discarded rope while also providing employment and supplementary income for the community.
Functionally, the mat, made of materials meant to last for years IN the ocean, will last for years on your doorstep. And, it’s texture is just what is called for in a door mat.
Most superficially, they are great looking, colorful and optimistic.
Needless to say, the mats are all handmade in Maine.
All of our mats are a ‘mixed bag’ so each are varied in color and pattern, which is how we like it. They are approximately 18’’ X 28’’.
